I had always been terrified of being underwater, despite the fact that I am a good swimmer and learned basic lifeguard skills from the Red Cross. So we went to Providencia, or Old Providence, that beautiful little Colombian island off the coast of Nicaragua and I decided to take the course. The ground school and swimming pool sessions went reasonably well. The next day they tossed us in open water and I was oh so close to just walking away forever. Fortunately I did go under and every bit of terror was replaced by curiosity and amazement. SCUBA has become one of my favourite activities. We try to go diving at least once a year.

I don't yet have an enclosure for any of my cameras so I don't have any underwater pix. Most of the ones presented here are at the surface.

(Some of the links below are also reached from the Travel section.)

  • Colombia - Dec. 2005 - These are the diving-related pictures from our recent family reunion. Now with underwater pictures.
  • Bonaire - May 2005 - Originally postponed because of my job in Antarctica, we finally made it to Bonaire. Fantastic shore diving.
  • Cozumel - Jun. 2004 - Another strictly SCUBA trip. Excellent diving but unfortunately very few photos.
  • Key West - Nov. 2003 - For Thanksgiving 7 of us decided to go diving in Key West. We took Kim's Cessna.
  • Providencia - Jan. 2002 - My first diving trip. Sharon and I got our Open Water certification during this trip to a beautiful Colombian island in the Caribbean.
