For thanksgiving
2001 a large group consisting of Jay, Bridget, Rich, Daniel, Marc,
Sharon and me headed out for west Texas again. We stayed at Terlingua
Ranch, so this made it fairly easy for Daniel and Rich to fly in, since
one of the runways in this 250,000 acre ranch is right next to the
cabins that we like to rent. They flew in on one of Rich’s planes and,
after having landed in the wrong place, eventually found the rest of us.
Marc and I rode our street bikes, and Sharon, Jay, and Bridget took the
car pulling a trailer with two dirt bikes and three mountain bikes. We
were fully equipped.
We had perfect
weather, and got a chance throughout the week to do a good bit of hiking
and dirt riding.

Marc, Sharon, Rich, me, Bridget, and Daniel at the trailhead near Chisos Lodge Daniel reaching Emery peak, the highest point in Big Bend. Sharon enjoying the view at Emery peak. Jay, Bridget, and Sharon getting ready to go mountain biking. Marc along the river road. We stopped for a snack on our trip through the desert. Luckily I noticed that my license plate had broken and was falling off. Marc by an abandoned car near the mercury mines. Marc and I at the end of the river road. Sharon on her dirt bike on the way to Ernst Tinaja. Jay, Bridget, Sharon, and me hiking to Ernst Tinaja. Interesting intrusions on this rock. Bridget and Jay in Ernst Tinaja. Hills near the hot springs in the east side of the park. Sharon and I by some ruins near the hot springs. Sunset with ocotillo plant.
Instead of hiking south rim, we decided to go to the highest point in the park, Emery peak. They are adjacent trails. It was a great hike.
In the meantime, Marc and I took the motorcycles and followed the river road. Marc took my XT-350, and I took Sharon’s Honda XL-200. Ever since, it has been upside down since the upper corners broke. It was a great desert run. The first of many to come... The stratified rocks in this area are quite amazing. This is one of my favorite pictures, as it shows the scale and beautiful colors of the strata.
