I have dreamt of this trip for a very long time. This May/June we were
going to visit Monaco and Southern France, but having done that several
times, I suggested that, for the price of the F1 Grand Prix tickets
alone, we could visit the Amazon Jungle instead. Slightly different
cuisine, yet every bit as interesting. Or perhaps I should say
challenging. I read the book "Amazon Beaming" by Petru Popescu many years ago. It is easily the (non-academic) text that has influenced my life the most. So it became imperative that this trip not be to just anyplace in the Amazon, but to Mayoruna territory and the Javari River or as close to it as possible. Not surprisingly, the trip turned out to be absolutely spectacular. A very close second to the best trip ever, which remains Antarctica. So here some the pictures of what, I hope, is only the first chapter in a long overdue part of what I consider my basic education. A photographic note: My camera started giving up the ghost during our journey. This misfortune accounts for the poor quality of several of the images below. The machine will soon be replaced. Thanks to Sharon for letting me use a few of her pix. Coming very soon: AMAZÔNIA blog (Gallery has 71 pix). |
